Mom and dad brought baby Charley to the studio a couple of weeks ago for her first portraits and we had a great time working with them. Special Delivery was the session they chose so we worked with baby Charley to create that portrait first…

Because Charley was doing so well, we moved on to several of our other newborn sets to capture a few more lovely portraits… (baby Charley will be featured in our new sessions catalog)

To round it out, we had learned from mom and dad during our presession consultation that they are both Harley Davidson riders — as are we!!!! So we created a special newborn set just for Charley around a Sportster 883 fuel tank. Charley now has the Harley “experience” and is ready to head out on the open road — when she gets just a bit older. Can you tell that she’s thinking, “I love this Harley, when can I have my own?”

Byron spent a week recently in Dallas, TX with Gregory and Lesa Daniel, owners of Gregory Daniel Portraits, studying advanced mixed media portaiture which combines portrait photography with painting to create heirloom giclée canvas wall art. Florida artist, Gregory Daniel is the country’s leading mixed media portrait artist, his art hangs in mansions across the country. Gregory is a Fellow of the American Society of Photographers and also holds the Master of Photography and the Photographic Craftsman Degrees from Professional Photographers of America.

Mixed media giclée canvas portraits must not be confused with the inkjet prints that some photographers call their “giclee” option.

Byron will speak on The Science of Digitial Photography at the January meeting of the Southern Tier Professional Photographers. The meeting will be held at Brothers 2 Restaurant, 2901 Watson Boulevard, Endwell, NY, (607) 785-5550, 6:00-9:00 pm. The talk will be open to all members and to those aspiring photographers in the field of photography. The dinner will begin at 6:00pm to be followed by the talk. A print competition will then wrap up the meeting. Cost: $20. Contact Sharon Lewis, STPP President at 607-785-7642 with questions, RSVP’s.

A synopisis of the talk follows:

The Science of Digital Photography
We will discuss camera basics: capture modes, lens, shutter, aperture, ISO and the interrelationship between them. We will discuss digital sensors: how they work, what “field of view crop” means and why that matters to you. We will discuss color spaces, white balance and color temperature and how they apply to your images. And finally , we will discuss digital image formats and what you need to know about them to preserve your images.

You will come away with an understanding of how your digital camera actually works and how to apply that knowledge to capturing the images you desire.

Byron elected Vice President of Southern Tier Professional Photographers for 2011

Byron was recently elected to the Board of Directors and to the office of Vice President for Southern Tier Professional Photographers, Inc. of New York. As Vice President, Byron’s responsiblities will include the speakers program for the monthly meetings.

STPP, a regional section affiliate of Professional Photographers Society of New York State and Professional Photographers of America, is celebrating 100 years of existence this year. All area photographers are welcome to join the organization. STPP meets monthly at Brothers 2 Restaurant, 2901 Watson Boulevard, Endwell, NY, (607) 785-5550, on the third Tuesday at 6pm.

Byron is the only Certified Professional Photographer in Susquehanna County and is Pennsylvania Liason to the Professional Photographers Certification Commission.

Byron to serve on Old Mill Village Museum Association Board of Directors

Byron was recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Old Mill Village Museum Association for the three year term of 2011-2013. Old Mill Village, located on Route 848 one mile south of New Milford, is celebrating its 50th year of existence.

The Old Mill Village Museum Mission Statement: Old Mill Village’s purpose is to collect, preserve, protect, exhibit, educate and interpret the history and heritage of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Endless Mountains Heritage Region.

It’s getting closer to done…

We broke ground a little over a year ago, but we’re finally getting closer. The outside of the home is mostly finished now and we have reset our expections for move-in. We are now hoping to be in by Christmas — wouldn’t that be a nice present? Reneé sat down with the architect early last year and they designed this home from scratch — her dream is getting closer.

BTW, if you look close, you can see the new Kubota tractor in left edge of the image — we’re now bonafide country folk. Our stable includes our orginal 1941 Ford tractor, the Kubota tractor and the Kubota RTV utility vehicle. Who knows, maybe the pygmy goats are next…

Byron wins 2010 NPPPA Folio Competition

Award winning photographic artist and Certified Professional Photographer, Byron Sands, does it again. Byron is announced the winner of the 2010 Folio Competition of the Northeast Pennsylvania Professional Photographers Association. Along with the the folio competition win, Byron also won ribbons for all four portraits entered: 2 Blue Ribbon Awards of Excellence and 2 Red Ribbon Awards of Quality.
